More questions relating to the consultation about the new schools, library, clinic etc in Tilehurst Jan 2007

  1. Plans: Please may we have a copy of the Nightingale indicative plans of the community buildings currently on display in the library

Yes, please pick these up from reception at the civic centre on 16th or 17th

  1. Procedures :Will there be future consultations or  chances to comment on the :

a)  overall design of the buildings e.g. -it seems wasteful of space: no building over the car-park

b)     traffic proposals?

c)      number and type of houses to be built before any land sale occurs?

d)      amount of land to be sold off?

Yes as part of the planning process

  1. Re the Laurels Site

a)      Please confirm that the mature trees shown in the illustrations will be retained, and the additional ones shown in the Nightingale plans are illustrative.

It is currently the intention but it would depend on detailed design

  1. Re the buildings on the Laurels Site

a)      Please clarify the symbol for the lift- is it located near the sport hall (ground floor) and the caretaker store ( first floor).

b) The library does not appear to have any separate quiet homework/study areas and there is no identified area for IT provision. Please clarify.

c) The street seems   too narrow for display –previously commented on concerns re safety etc Is this why the library display area is located   out of the way upstairs?

d) The building will be the office base for many RBC employees and so should be designed with green travel plans in mind- there should be shower facilities for staff (including teachers who have just taught games…) also please clarify the location of bike racks  for staff and public use.

e) Please confirm opening arrangements for the public facilities e.g. will the toilets will be available for public use when the library is shut?

f) Primary School: In contrast to modern 2 f.e. entry primary schools   members of the Globe group visited, there is a surprising lack of specialist facilities. Will the school library, & IT be in the central internal streets? There are no specialist music facilities- or is this in the small hall? Where are the storage facilities (separate from furniture storage) for the music instruments? There are no specialist areas for Art, Science or any technology other than food. Please list the improved modern facilities in the new school  (beyond being on one site, with reduced maintenance costs) .

g) Primary School: Are there enough cloakroom storage facilities- i.e. peg spaces-are they too to be located in the internal street?  What will happen when the pitch rented out at weekend- are you assuming all stuff taken home every night?

h) Primary school grounds: Where would jungle-gym equipment for the school go?

i)        Primary school/nursery school: No parents’ room?

j)      Nursery school: Why is the name ‘nursery manager’ allocated to the head teacher of the nursery school?

Nursery manager is an architects term only, in reference to your other questions, we have not got a detailed design yet and are therefore unable to provide you with this much detail.  Thank you however for your comments, which will be fed into the detailed design phase, assuming approval to proceed is granted.

k)      Does RBC intend to subsume the specialist nursery into the primary school? If the latter is true does this mean that a new nursery school will be built to cater for the children of Moorlands/Upcroft/ChurchEnd Lane etc who currently go to Blagrave nursery school?

There are no plans to do so at the current time.
